  • Inaugural function of the Cultural association for the year 2010-2011 was arranged on 30th July 2010 in Patanjali Sabhagruha. Mrs. Sampada Kulkarni famous Actress was the chief guest.

Dramatics committee

Our students participated in Marathi Drama competition held by INT. First round was conducted on 28th September 2010.We presented the drama "Lasso" written and directed by Mr. Aniket Sane who is working as assistant director of serial on T.V. Around 40 students participated in drama. Among 48 entries, our college was selected for second round. Second round was conducted on 4th October 2010.Around 50 students worked as artists and backstage artists. Our performance was appreciated by one and all. Lead role was performed by following students.

Magazine Committee


Through Magazine Committee various competitions were held. At the end of the year we published comprehensive magazine "Sanyuja." Publishing of the annual magazine gives students a way to express their creative thinking and writing potential. The Cover page was deigned by Omkar Kulkarni from T.Y.B.Sc (I.T.) and coverpage photograph was taken by Rajas Mhatre. Cover page decorated with the sensitive poem by Akshata Pehelkar(F.Y.J.C.).

Club Activities

  • Sankhyiki Club

1. Organization "SANKHYKI" in collaboration with School of Science, NMIMS University, had organized two days workshop on 8th and 9th Jan. 2011. Our S.Y.B.Sc. (MS) students, 1) Kum. Rohit Kumar Jha 2) Ms. Anjum Khan and 3) Ms. Divya Nair won second prize in Poster Competition and Ms Divya Nair won the second prize in Elocution competition held by "Sankhyiki" Around 50 students from all colleges of Mumbai University participated in Competitions.
2. A presentation by Dr. (Mrs.) Pooja Thakkar has been organized on 6th Jan 2011 on "Personality Development and how to overcome depression.
3. Prof. A. P. Patil, Head of Statistics Department gave a talk by using multimedia on "Career in Statistics" on 25th Aug. 2010.
4. On 26th July 2010, a multimedia presentation was given by Mr. Amit Tiwari and Mr. Omkar More from T. Y. B.Sc. Class on P. C. Mahalnobis to mark the Statistics Day.

  • Green Force Nature Club

1. A TALK BY- MR. VAIBHAV. DESAI Date-16th December 2010MR. VAIBHAV. DESAI is BE Computer, a programmer analyst in Godrej. He is working for environmental awareness. He is traveling on bicycle all over the world and has already traveled all over the country on bicycle twice. It was an interactive session for the students.34 students and 11 staff members attended the session.
2. PANDA FESTIVAL- KURLA.Date-9th and 10th December 2010. Nature club members (students of S.Y.B.Sc-CBZ) participated in the Panda festival organized by World Wildlife Fund for nature club at Mumbai-Kurla. Six students participated in Rangoli competition and 4 students were selected as volunteers for different events. Nature club co-coordinator- Dr. Mrs. Poonam.N.Kurve participated in Wildlife Photography Exhibition by exhibiting wildlife pictures photographed by her.
3. A Lecture on "Solid Waste Management" by Dr Sanjay Joshi, Biology Teacher from our own college was held on 18th Aug. 2010 in Patanjali Sabhagruha Dr Joshi has been associated with the organization- 'Envirovigil'. He has written more than 1oo articles on the same subject in various newspapers and magazines He gave us guidance on the topic- Solid-waste management and the proper way of disposing waste. He told about creating awareness among the masses about waste disposal and waste management.
4. Students and staff participated in the Tree Plantation programme arranged by Hariyali on 27th June 2010. Students were given seeds of various trees like Tamarind, Dates, Gulmohar, Banyan, Ashoka, Almond and many more.

  • Srishti

Botany club "SRISHTI", was started with the sole aim of providing its members with more information on the subject. Every year, the club organizes various activities and makes sure that its member students are benefited the most. We believe to bring nature to classroom and classroom to nature.
A lecture was organized on 18th August, 2010 by the Botany department where in Prof. (Mrs.) Vandana Sathe, was invited as the chief guest. She is working as the Head of Botany department in Kirti M. Doongursee College.

In the first session Prof. (Mrs.) Vandana Sathe gave a very descriptive and informative presentation on "Terrarium/Bottle Garden". According to her Terrarium is a unit with a high capacity to retain moisture that is used for displaying plants. Thus these are miniature greenhouses in which small landscapes are planned. She also explained the commercial aspect of Terrariums.

The second session of the function was organized in Botany department where Prof. (Mrs.) Vandana Sathe demonstrated the preparation of Terrarium and thereafter students of Botany Club prepared different types of bottle garden under her guidance. The function was concluded by Ms. Reshma Patil, student of T.Y.B.Sc. (Botany) with a small thanksgiving speech.

  • IT Club

A Lecture on ' Science and Technology Development in China ' by Dr. Sudhakar Agarkar Research Scientist from Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai was arranged by Department of Information Technology on Monday , 23 August 2010 at 1.30 p.m. in Patanjali Auditorium . Dr. V.V. Bedekar, Chairman, Vidya Prasarak Mandal, Thane, Dr. P.M. Kelkar, Director, Dr.VN BRIMS and Dr.(Mrs.) S. Singh, Principal, Joshi Bedekar College were also present for this session.

Principal Dr. (Mrs.) M.K. Pejaver welcomed the Dignitaries, members of the staff and students. She mentioned about the participation of students of Sau. A.K. Joshi School, along with Dr. V.V. Bedekar and Dr. Agarkar in International events on innovative Science Projects in China and about awards for the best projects.

Dr. P.M. Kelkar narrated his experiences of previous visits to China, related to Technology and Development. Dr. V.V. Bedekar highlighted the commitment of Vidya Prasarak Mandal towards imparting quality education at all levels. In his presentation, Dr. Agarkar explained about visits and achievements of students in China and gave information about Technology Development in China. Principal Dr. (Mrs.) M.K. Pejaver concluded with the vote of thanks. 30 staff members and 80 students of B.N. Bandodkar College and 5 staff members of Joshi Bedekar College were also present for this lecture.

 

Excursions

Department of Botany

Botany department had organized one day excursion on 4th August 2010 for S.Y. B. Sc. and T. Y. B. Sc. students of Botany. Students visited following places,
1. Kamala Nehru park
2. Ferozeshah Mehta Garden
3. Maharashtra Nature Park
4. National Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (Biophysics Department of Mumbai University).
Maharashtra Nature Park situated near Dharavi is developed on a dumping ground. Today it is well known educational centre for nature lovers and students. Right in the center of the park is a sun-shaped building, which houses amongst others an amphitheatre, a library, an audio-visual room, etc. it also has an astral garden (Nakshtravan) which has 27 plants representing 27 divisions of sky. It includes plants like Ficus glomerata, Emblica officinalis, Nux vomica, Golden Bamboo, Ficus benghalensis etc. Students had great fun with volunteers of Maharashtra Nature Park while observing plants, butterflies and insects. It mainly has local varieties of trees and shrubs and a section of medicinal plants.
National Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (Biophysics Department of Mumbai University) is located at Vidyanagari Campus Research students of Biophysics department presented their research work on following topics
1. Molecular Modeling.
2. Study on Oxidative stress in head and neck cancer patients undergoing treatment by radio chemotherapy.
3. Introduction to silver nano particles.
It was a great opportunity for students to be in touch with nature as well as to avail futuristic research endeavors.
The entire excursion was brain enriching and pleasant experience for students.

Last year's theme is continued for this academic year, for children science congress and the theme is "Planet Earth: Our Home Explore, Care & Share" and sub themes are Atmosphere, Weather & Climate, Sky and air pollution, Energy , Lithosphere L Soil, Land and Agriculture, Biodiversity , Hydrosphere-Water & Wetlands , Human Influence on Environment.

Gymkhana Committee (Sports)

Indoor Activities were held from 10th December 2009 to 23rd December 2009. Annual Sports Meet was organized on 21st December 2009 on college ground. Students participated in various events. College Gymkhana committee arranged Carom, Table Tennis Tournaments for the Teaching and Non-teaching staff members.

Activities conducted during academic year 2010-11

  • Award of Service Medal:

    Our NCC Officer Capt. (Dr.) Moses Kolet was awarded 12 Years long Service Medal by the Govt. of India in August 2010. Dr. Vijay Bedekar, Chairman, Vidya Prasarak Mandal, ceremoniously decorated Dr. Moses with the medal on 15th August 2010. Cadets Ajay More, Satish Shelar and Vishal Patil won the Trophy for Best Group Song at the 3rd Annual Training Camp held at Mumbai from 15-25 October 2010. Dr. Vijay Bedekar felicitated Ms Reshma Patil along with 2 NCC Cadets for efficiently anchoring and conducting the cultural programme of VPM institutions on Republic Day 2011 in the College Campus. The Following Cadets were awarded medals and trophies at our unit level on 26 January 2011. Dr. Vijay Bedekar, Chairman, Vidya Prasarak Mandal, Thane handed over the prizes to the respective winners:

  • International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking
    The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed in on 26th June 2010. The NCC Army (Boys & Girls) and Navy units on the campus, along with the NSS unit had organized a seminar on 'Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking of Drugs' to observe the day. The Theme of the event was 'Think Health; Not Drugs.' The seminar was held in Patanjali Sabhagriha. Over 200 cadets, students and members of the staff attended and actively participated in the interactive sessions.
    Cadets had prepared slogans against drug abuse, which were displayed. The entire proceedings were efficiently managed and conducted by cadets and student volunteers. The first guest speaker to grace the event was Senior Inspector of Police Shri D.D.Shivthare from Narcotic Drugs and Psychopathic Substances Cell, Crime Branch, Thane. He represented the Law Enforcement organization. Various aspects of drugs, drug abuse and trafficking were discussed in his presentation. The second invited speaker was Advocate Manoj Bhatt, an alumni an ex-NCC cadet. He enthralled the gathering with his presentation on the legal aspects of drug abuse. The invited lectures were followed by presentations by students, on different aspects of the topic, details of which are as given below:

Yoga Club

  • Special batch, from 04/12 /2010 to 29/01/ 2011 for NCC Boys (Army wing) was arranged to train the students and staff in yoga. Around 3o cadets & 6 other students attended (joined) the program. 26 cadets and 3 students completed the course. Shri. Bhaskarrao Patwardhan was the Chief Guest for valedictory function. He is Yoga Shikshak, Editor, Yogaprasad, Shri Ambica Yoga Kutir, Thane.
    Shri Patwardhanji gave excellent talk on morals in life. He emphasized the importance of physical fitness, healthy mind and intelligent brain for which he advised to practice yoga regularly. According to him TV, Mobile and Computer (to some extent) are major enemies of mankind as they tend to create unrest and bad habits among the youth. One must use them with due care. This can be learnt by practicing yoga, a way of life. His talk was highly motivating and effective.

  • Yoga Certificate Course was conducted on 6th July 2010 to 14th July 2010.The purpose of program was to train the students and staff in yoga.54 students & 03 teachers joined the program.25 students and 1 teacher completed the course. Shri Ramachandra Surveji, Secretary, Shri Ambica Yoga Kutir, Thane, was the chief guest. Shri Surveji gave a very motivating talk on importance of yoga for students and everyone. He emphasized the need to practice yoga regularly.
    The participants were impressed and motivated.

Women's Development cell

  • Lecture on "Self-defense techniques"

  • A lecture on "Self-defense techniques" was organized on 16th October 2010, where in Ms Jignyasa was invited as the chief guest to create awareness about the importance of self-defense.
    Appropriate self-defense techniques teach us how to size up a situation and help us to decide what we can do. In general, people think of self-defense as a karate kick to the groin or jab in the eyes of an attacker. But self-defense actually means doing everything possible to avoid fighting someone who threatens or attacks you. With this aim the function was inaugurated in the Patanjali Sabhagriha. Around 10 staff members. and 50 students were present.
    In the first session, Ms Jignyasa gave a brief introduction about TARA (TATA RALLIS), the company she works for. Further she introduced everyone to the term "Self defense". According to her self defense means protecting oneself from physical, emotional or mental problems. She also stressed on the 3 basic steps of self defense, which are being aware, being confident and being calm & cool person. Using verbal skills and other techniques. Using physical techniques. Her advice to everyone to avoid a potential attack before it happens was to trust one's instincts.
    The second session of the function was organized in the Yoga area near Patanjali Sabhagriha where Jignyasa madam demonstrated the 7 basic techniques of Self Defense. Thereafter students performed all the different techniques under her guidance.
    By the time session came to an end she also taught special techniques for breaking an attacker's grasp and various other things that one can do to break free.

  • As part of the Women Development Cell, a lecture was organized where in Dr. Beena Joshi was invited as the chief guest. She is a clinician and works in the area of public health specifically on reproductive and sexual health. She is currently working as a researcher in the capacity of Scientist -C at the Department of Operations Research, National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health (NIRRH) based in Mumbai India, which is one of the premier institutes of Indian Council of Medical Research. Her areas of interest are Adolescent Reproductive Health and RTI/STI including HIV. There was a huge participation from students; around 95 students including both boys and girls were present in large numbers.
    Dr. Beena Joshi started her speech by telling about NIRRH which was started in 1954. She gave a very informative presentation on "male involvement in women's health". Dr. Beena Joshi presented various study results which emphasized more on the men to women ratio, literacy rate, gender and sex, morbidity, mortality, adolescent and youth, deprivation, nutritional status, HIV, gender equality, human rights, etc. The reports showed women, not only from the lower strata of the society but also from the middle class to be on a medically dangerous zone as there are many cases of malnutrition, anemia, female foeticides, early marriages, etc.
    Dr. Beena Joshi also said that the youngsters are the future for equality among women & men. She explained how men play an imperative role in developing a women's life. She gave more emphasis on women's health. The function was concluded by Ms. Smita Patil, student of T.Y.B.Sc. (Botany) with a small thanksgiving speech.

Staff Academy

  • Vice Principal Jr. College Mr. R.T. Kulkarni retired on 31st Oct 2010. All staff appreciated his cool and calm nature which is responsible for his successful career. He and his family members were felicitated by staff academy.

  • To felicitate different teacher achievers and to offer best wishes to departing Vice Principal Mr. R.T. Kulkarni, Staff Academy arranged a meeting of all staff on 29th Oct 2010. In this function we felicitated various teachers for their achievements.
    1. Mr. Prakash Mali from Junior College received as much as 45 different awards for his contributions to culture, arts and society.
    2. Dr Moses Kolet received a long service award (12 years) from central government.
    3. Prof Namdeo Mandge received ''Thane Gaurav" Award through Thane Municipal Corporation.

Alumni Association

  • Our past student Jitendra Eknath Ghude (pursuing his M. Sc. Part - I in Zoology at Jhunjhunwals College) was invited on 10th February 2011 to interact with the T. Y. B. Sc. Zoology students. He was a student who scored 52% marks at F.Y. and 57% S.Y. levels but raised himself to 72% at T.Y.B.Sc. with Zoology as the principal subject. He discussed his methodology about studying with the current students. Jitendra stressed upon the attendance during lectures and also during preliminary exams. He emphasized the importance of study by group discussion.

  • Our 1982 passed out student Mr. Sanjay Sule who presently runs Technical institute at Thane (Industrial Engineering Institute) was invited on 7th February 2011 to interact with our present students. He impressed upon the student to continue their studies beyond B.Sc. degree. He informed them about various courses of further studies available after B.Sc.
    Both programmes were well received by the students.

  • Career Melava was arranged from 29th November to 2nd December for Junior and Degree College students. Experts in various fields explained different avenues for career options.

  • Parents' Meetings: To discuss the problems of students and to make parents aware of the progress of college, Parents' meetings were conducted for parents of F.Y.B.Sc on 28th Aug 2010 at 5.00 p.m. and S.Y.B.Sc on 27th Aug 2010 at 6.00 p.m. in Patanjali Sabhagruha. Detail information about various curricular and extra curricular activities was given by various Coordinators. Rules about Examinations and Attendance were briefed. Principal Dr Mrs. M.K. Pejaver had a dialogue with parents and she presented the information of major events reflecting the progress of college.

  • Satya-Narayan Pooja: As per our yearly practice, Satya-Narayan Pooja was arranged on 27th August 2010 in Gymkhana. Mr. & Mrs. Parsekar from Gymkhana performed pooja. Many teaching and non-teaching staff together with students was present for Pooja.

  • A Lecture on "How to cope with educational stress" by Dr Shubha Thatte, well known Psychologist from Thane, was arranged by Junior college for S.Y.J.C students on Thursday 5th Aug. 2010 at 9.45 a.m. in Patanjali Sabhagruha. In her lecture she gave various examples of different students who suffered from psychological pressures and who overcome those difficulties with their will power. She requested students to take the life easy and climb the ladder of success.

  • Parents Teachers Association: A meeting of Parents Teachers Association for T.Y.B.Sc (Zoology).class was arranged on 28th July2010. Parents showed good response for this meeting. Parents were given idea about various activities and efforts taken by department for overall progress of students. They were also informed about various study tours which form a compulsory part of their syllabus. Parents also suggested some ways to improve student's attentiveness in study. Various issues like students' attendance, discipline, academic performance, health, Yoga for concentration and study tours were discussed during meeting. All parents and teachers actively participated in the discussion.
