Inaugural lecture

Inaugural lecture was arranged for S.Y. B.Sc. and T.Y. B. Sc students on 14th June 2007 and for F.Y. B.Sc. students on 11th July 2007, to explain the rules and regulations of the college and facilities provided by the college using audio-visual facility.

Cultural Association

     The programes of the cultural association 2007-08 began with the 40th University Youth Festival Elimination Round, Zone IV in collaboration with Joshi Bedekar College on 3rd August 2007. The function commenced with "Ishstavan" by Sheetal Sonone & was followed by the lighting of the lamp by Dr.Vijay Joshi, vice-principal, Birla College Kalyan & Dr.P.N.Pabrekar Director, Department of Student's Welfare, Mumbai University along with Principal Dr.Madhuri Pejaver, Dr. Shakuntala Singh. Various competitions like Music, Literary Events, Fine Arts were organized in this Festival. Near about 40 colleges participated in this Youth Festival.
     The second event of the cultural association was the Funny programs organized by Radio Mirchi on 29th August 2007 at Thorale Bajirav Peshawe Sabhagrah.
     The third event of the cultural association was Singing competition organized for our college students on 13th September 2007 at Auditorium. Near about 20 students participated in this competition.
     Annual Gathering "Aakanksha" had an artistic start from 18th December 2007 with Mehndi, Bridal & Bride Groome Makup & Haire style competitions. Our judges were Mrs.Trupti Sonawane from Joshi Bedekar College & Mrs. Nutan More. Many boys also participated in these competitions. The next morning was equally artistic & had various competitions like Flower Arrangement, Salad Making & Rangoli. Our judge was Kajal Gaytonde. The first out door competition was Personality contest, Talent Hunt for our Mr. & Miss. Bandodkar. Krunal Bhosale was selected as Mr.Bandodkar & Nivedita Bendre was Miss.Bandodkar. They achieved the crown by passing many elimination rounds. The next was Mono Acting & Mimicry competition
     20th December 2007 was again exciting & started with Instrumental, Singing, Antakshari along with Fashion Show. "Akanksha" Festival came to an end with Ramp Walk by Teaching & Non-teaching Staff, Core committee members & volunteers of cultural association.

Our students participated in the Drama competition held by Mrugajal and presented the drama "Mi Ka Melo"

Magazine Committee


     Throughout the year the wallpapers were displayed based on certain themes. Cartoon competition, Short story competitions were arranged through this committee.
     On 17th January 2008, the magazine "Sanyuja" was published, with reports of various committees, many articles, and poems in Marathi, Hindi and English.

Literary Association

The activities of Literary Association, for the academic year 2007 - 2008 were started from the month July 2007. Our students participated in various competitions which were organized in various colleges. Various competitions were organized for Junior and Degree college students. Essay Writing, Story writing, Quiz, Poetry writing, Elocution and debate in our college. About 87 participants enjoyed these competitions.

Department of Zoology

  1. Dr. R. P. Athalye, Dr. (Mrs) V.D.Manjramkar and Dr.(Mrs) P.N. Kurve, Shri Amrutkar accompanied S.Y. B. Sc. Students to Urali Kanchan -Pune on 13th and 14th Dec 2007. Students visited
         i) BAIF at Urali Kanchan,       ii) B V Rao Poultry farm, Urali Kanchan
         iii)Bee keeping center, Pune. iv) Snake Park - Katraj Pune.
  2. Dr. (Mrs) M. K. Pejaver, Dr.(Mrs) N. N. Patil, Dr. K.M. Pariya and Shri Jagtap P R accompanied and guided T.Y.B.Sc. students to Rajasthan from 31st Dec.07 to 07th Jan 08. They visited ,
         i)Ranathambor National Park ii) Keoladeo Ghana National Park
         iii)Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary iv) Gothada Talao
         v)Jaipur City.                    vi)Jaipur Zoo

  3. Dr. (Mrs.) P. N. Kurve, Mr. Rathod accompanied and guided T.Y.B.Sc. students to Karanja on 23th Jan.08. They Observed different types of fishes at the fish landing centers, fisheries as well as the shore flora and fauna.

Institute visits

  • Dr. K.M. Pariya and Dr. (Mrs.) P. N. Kurve, accompanied T Y B Sc students to FSI, Mumbai. on 1st Aug.07. The FSI staff explained about the activities of the institute, the research activities and different fishery aspects.
  • Dr. R P Athalye. Dr. (Mrs.) N. N. Patil, Dr. (Mrs.) S.V.Mahajan, Dr. (Mrs.) Vinda Manjramkar. accompanied T.Y.B.Sc: students to Thyrocare, Sanpada, Navi Mumbai.on 26th Nov.07 & 27th Nov.07 The students observed the recent and advanced facilities for pathological and clinical studies. It was a 4 hour course in clinical studies.
  • Dr. (Mrs.) Vinda Manjramkar accompanied T. Y. B. Sc: students to ACTREC, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.on 06th Dec.07 The students and staff were briefed about recent trends in cancer research and the facilities for the research.
  • F.Y B Sc students visit to Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai, was arranged on 04th Jan.08

Department of Botany

  1. An excursion was arranged for the students of F.Y. B.Sc. & T.Y. B.Sc. on 15.12.07 Saturday for Kissan Expo, Mushi - Pune. Dr. (Mrs.) M.S. Mulgaonkar, Dr. N. S. Tekale, Dr. (Mrs.) M. Saha and Dr. V. M. Jamdhade accompanied these students. At Kissan Expo, Mushi - Pune students were introduced to some of the modern techniques used by the farmers Students observed the tissue cultured banana plants, bamboo, sugarcane and Jatropa plants used as biofuel. There was a beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and flowers growing in different parts of Maharashtra. Nursery products and different flowering and foliage plants were in display and were also for sale. Note worthy was the artistic display of Orchids and lilies.
  2. An excursion was arranged for the students of S.Y. B.Sc. & T.Y. B.Sc. (Botany) for three days 06.01.08 to 08.01.08 to Aurangabad. Dr. (Mrs.) M.S. Mulgaonkar, Dr. (Mrs.) M. Saha, Dr. V. M. Jamdhade and Mr. Rakesh Bane (lab attendant) accompanied these students. There a visit to 'Institute of Science' was arranged. Students studied the flora of Aurangabad and enjoyed landscape gardens, flowering and foliage plants at Dnyaneshwar Udyan.

Department of Information Technology

Industrial Visit
Thirty two students of T.Y.B.Sc.(I.T.) along with Mr. A. A. Kale went to Bangalore to visit industries from Feb. 06, to Feb. 10, 2008. They visited

College school complex

This year for children's science congress the theme declared is "Biodiversity". Hence a number of schools from Thane city requested us to guide them in various projects.

Guidance was given to the students from following schools

2. Bedekar vidyamandir Saraswati school ,Rabodi
3. SES school ,Pachpakhadi, Thane
4. Saraswati marathi medium school, Thane.
5. Municipal school,Vaghbil ,Thane.

7. St. Lowrence school, Pokharan road,Thane.

The projects were on various topics such as insects, fishes, mangroves, Flora of Yeoor, relation between leaves and plants, lake biodiversity, palms, leaves used as Ganpati patri etc.

Gymkhana Committee (Sports)

Our 80 students participated in various inter-collegiate & open state level competitions.

1] Chess Tournament

  • Our Degree college Boys team was selected among the Probable for University of Mumbai Tournments.
  • Our Degree college Girls team participated in Chess Tournaments organized by University of Mumbai.

    2] Cricket Tournament
  • Our Degree college team reached quarter final in Inter collegiate Cricket Tournaments. University of Mumbai under the able guidance of our cricket coach Mr. Shashikant Naik.
  • Our Degree college team was Third in Thane District Zone.
  • Our Junior college team participated in Tournaments organized by Zilla Parishad under the able guidance of our cricket coach Mr.Shashikant Naik.
  • Our cricket team won Trophy at Dimensions 2007 , organized by KET's V.G. Vaze College of Arts , Science and Commerce,Mulund (East).

    3] Volleyball Tournment
    This year our Degree college Boys team participated in Volleyball Tournaments organized by Bombay University.

    4] Badminton Tournment
  • Our Junior college Girls team was runner up in Badminton Tournaments organized by Zilla Parishad.
  • Our Junior college Boys team participated in Badminton Tournaments organized by Zilla Parishad.

    5] Table Tennis Tournment
  • Our Junior college Boys team participated in Table Tennis Tournaments organized by Zilla Parishad.
  • Indoor Activities were held from December 03, 2007 to December 17, 2007.
  • Annual Sports Meet was organized on December 18, 2007 on college ground.

  •  Blood Donation Drive was organized jointly with NCC and LIONS Club in association with J.J. Hospital Blood Bank. 119 Units blood collected. College campus, Thane.
  •  Gandhi Peace March - Rally Arranged by Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal and NSS Unit Mumbai University At University Stadium Marine Lines.
  •  NSS Mass Rally On the occasion of the World AIDS Day in College Campus ,Thane.
  •  Street Play Arranged by NGO Akshara on womens Harassment at College Campus Thane.
  •  Seminar on AIDS awareness in association with women's cell at College Campus Thane.
  •  Rally On Gandhiji's 50th From Anniversary Arranged from Azad Maidan to Hutatma Chowk.
  •  NSS unit conducted a joint programme with Hariyali regarding dual presentations on Deluge Survey and Hariyali's Environmental journey. Municipal commissioner Mr.Nandakumar Jantre was the chief guest on this occasion.
  •  A big rally was organized on AIDS day along with the NGO Akshara.
  •  Our NSS Unit worked in collaboration with an NGO Hariyali, students volunteers had conducted a survey of repetitive water logging in Thane city. Hariyali along with our college NSS Unit gave a presentation of this survey in our Thorale Bajirao Peshave Sabhagruh.

Yoga Club

Yoga Club organizes yoga classes for students teachers and non-teaching staff of V.P.M. Institutes, with the support from Shri Ambika Yoga Kutir, Thane. This year classes were held from July to September (every Wednesday and Saturday) and from December to January (every Saturday)

Women's Development cell

      This year the activity of women cell started on 28th July 2007 with the lecture of Dr. Sandhya Mainkar who is a Head of Business unit (PCI Cannon Hygiene) and is working in the field of pest control and Hygiene Care Services. She emphasized that college is the workplace for the students and must be properly maintained. More than 100 students attended the lecture.
     In collaboration with Rotary Club of Thane East AIDS awareness programme was organised on 12th Dec 2007. Doctors from Rajjv Gandhi Medical college were present to answer the difficulties of the students. A short film related to the subject was shown. About 100 students attended the programme
     A lecture on "Women and Law" by Mrs. Srividya Jaykumar I/C Principal TMC Law college was arranged on Wednesday 28th Nov 2007. She emphasized on the sexual harassment at work place as well as at home. She also explained which acts will come under this law and where one can complain against such acts, where one can get information about it. She explained that everybody must be aware of not only the rights but also about the duties and responsibilities to be a good person.

    Our college has Employment cell through which we guide the students for placement. Letters from various companies and institutes looking for suitable graduates were displayed on the special notice board 'Grab It'. Staff Academy



We organize felicitation programme for retiring staff . On 26th April 2007, send off function was arranged for our colleges from Chemisry Department Mrs. V.V.Mahajan & Mr. A.K. Jagtap. We felicitated Mr. S.G. Medhekar(Chemistry Dept) on 25th Oct 2007 and Mrs S.N. Jogalekar (Maths Dept) on 31st Jan 2008.

Trekking / Hiking Committee



Hiking committee of our college arranged monsoon trek to 'Peth fort'. 43 students from degree and junior college attended the hike. They enjoyed the hike in heavy rains. During the hike they took the unusual route to the top and enjoyed the thrill of rock climbing. Six teachers accompanied the students and made the hike successful

Other

     University of Mumbai has granted recognition for graduation course in Biotechnology. Hence we have started F. Y. B. Sc. Bio-tech division of 30 students.
     Also we have got the permission to have additional division for graduation course in Information Technology, hence we have started 2nd division of F. Y. B.Sc. I.T. of 60 students.
     Our aim is to generate awareness among students. Hence a with the help of Swami Vivekananda Kendra Thane ,an exhibition of books and portraits of Swami Vivekananda was arranged in our college on 11th -12th Dec 2007.
     Our Non teaching members retired during this academic year are Shri T.B. Giri who was felicited on 31st March 2007, Shri A. Y. Raut on 30th April 2007 & Shri Govekar on 30th Jan 2008.
     A workshop was arranged for the office staff on 4th Oct 2007, to know how to Work with Thin Client technology which is newly installed in our office.

Alumni Association

The various programmes conducted in the academic year 2007-08 are as follows.

  1. Mr. Mahesh Temghare an Ex-student addressed T.Y.B.Sc. students about importance of horticulture on 16th Aug 2007. He also conducted several interactive training sessions during the basic course in indoor gardening arranged for our students in Aug-Sept 2007.
  2. Mr Sushil Samant our Ex student who passed B.Sc (Physics) in March 2005, after completing M.Sc ,he is presently a research student at T.I.F.R., guided our students regarding practical examination, he also explained the various courses available for B.Sc physics students. The programme was held on 21st Jan 2008.
  3. Miss. Kamakshi Nayak an intelligent Ex student from Zoology department who completed her graduation in the year 2006-07 with 80%. She is doing M.Sc. in Physiology from Mumbai University and has simultaneously cleared GRE &TOEFL, guided the students on 2nd Feb2008 regarding GRE. She gave information about different scholarships, funding organizations, etc. she even told about various professional courses available after completing B.Sc. (Zoology)
  4. Miss. Silvia Fernandes our brilliant Ex student from chemistry department who stood 1st in college in the subject of chemistry by scoring 85% marks in March2006 and presently doing M.Sc, had an Interactive session with our present students, in which she impressed upon the students the need for hard work and how the students can make the most of left out days of the current academic year for scoring good marks. The programme was held on 4th Feb 2008
  5. Ms Mansi Bhagdeo our brilliant Ex student from chemistry department who passed out in March1997, who has done M.Sc in 1999 with distinction, completed M.S. in chemistry, and also a masters degree in education, and working as education researcher at Virginia University US, guided our students about various technical formalities required to be completed for getting admitted to US Universities. The programme was held on 4th Feb 2008 .
  6. Alumni of Mathematics Department has organized a lecture on "Block Design" by Mrs S. N. Joglekar on her retirement on 28th Jan 2008. Mrs. S.N. Jogalekar was felicitated on that occasion
