A 3-day Workshop for teachers teaching SANSKRIT
at the School level

Sanskrit-Samvardhini Mandalam of the Sanskrit department
under the auspices of V.P.M's Joshi-Bedekar College,
Thane College Campus, Thane is organizing a

3-day workshop for teachers teaching Sanskrit at the school level
from 2nd to 4th November, 2006

This workshop aims at helping teachers teaching Sanskrit by providing expert guidance on the recently revised syllabus for standard IX.

Sanskrit as an ancient language is prosperous with its own language structure, syntax, and aesthetic appeal with a highly systematized grammar at its foundation. It is a language beyond par not only for its scholastic and beautiful literature but also for its valuable status as a spoken language. While we are all aware of and have explored the importance of Sanskrit for its grammatical, literary and scientific value, not many have dared to carry further its old tradition as a spoken language of the masses. Further, a language is best learnt when it is first heard, then spoken, thereafter read and finally written. Have we not learnt our mother tongue in the same manner? Unfortunately thus far in the State, where studying Sanskrit as a school subject was concerned the order of learning was reverse, and little or no importance was given to the spoken aspect. However, now, the educationists have taken a positive stance towards speaking Sanskrit. This has resulted in revision of the school and junior college syllabii for Sanskrit by way of introducing elements of conversation, picture description, letter writing etc.

As teachers, our knowledge of the subject is undoubtedly accurate and our training sound. But as learning is an on-going process and the fact that a teacher is first a student, we need to hone some of our previously unused talent and skill in this new dimension of Sanskrit conversation. It is our good fortune that we have the able support and guidance of connoisseurs of Sanskrit who are always striving for the promotion of the language among students and masses. This encouragement has culminated in the form of the above-said workshop as a preliminary endeavor in this direction.

This workshop which will span over 3 days will focus on the aspects given below:

  • Guidance and clarification of doubts pertaining to the new syllabus prescribed for Std. IX. This will include prose, poetry and unseen modules.
  • An overview of topics that will appear in the new syllabus for Std.X to be implemented from the new academic year 2007- 2008.
  • Projects and practice worksheets to aid better understanding of the topics discussed.
  • Demonstration of actual teaching with Sanskrit as a medium of instruction.
  • First hand experience for participants in carrying out a teaching session in Sanskrit.

The Research personnel and speakers for this workshop are eminent teachers and individuals who have been working selflessly for the cause of promotion of Sanskrit. This team of proficient teachers include:
