I present a brief report on the activities of our College during the academic year 2009-2010.

New Courses

Our college introduced  Bachelor of Mass Media Course in Marathi Medium from the academic year 2009-10.
Our college was one of the seven colleges to get permission to start Mass Media Course in  Mumbai University.
Our Junior College students were given the option to study Information Technology in the FY amd SYJC Arts and Commerce.  181 students from SYJC Arts and Commerce will be appearing for the Board Examination with I.T. as a subject for the first time.

 

  

EXAMINATIONS

Success at the Examination is an important index to evaluate the performance of an Institution. Judged from that angle we have done well.

 

Our H.S.C. results have been impressive.
  In the Commerce Faculty our pass percentage was 84.09%.

Our College has established a formidable reputation in the field of sports.  A separate report on the sports activities will be read later.  However, some of our distinctive achievements must be highlighted.

Athletics
Dhiraj Mishra of FYBCOM our Athletic Star will be representing India in South Asian Federation games in triple jump to be held in Jan 2010.  He has represented Mumbai University and won Gold Medal in triple jump at Ashwamedh Maharashtra state inter University held at Konkan Krushi Vidyapeeth Dapoli in Nov.09.
He has represented Maharashtra Boys under 20 Interzonal Nationals held at Lucknow in the month of June and has won Gold Medal.

Badminton
Sanket Shribhate of SYBCOM won the Bronze medal in individual championship matches held at University of Mumbai and also represented Mumbai University at all India University tournament.

Karate
Kanad Meshram of First year Banking Insurance won Gold Medal for outstanding karate skill in katta Black belt event Category & was  awarded gold medal for karate skill in Team Kumite event.

Swimming
Samrudhi Patil of TYBCOM won Bronze medal at Mumbai University in 50 mtrs free style.
Best Physique
Pradeep Taktode of TYBA won bronze medal at greater Mumbai & suburban district at open level competition.

Junior College
Football
Nikhil Surve & Gaurav Kadam of XI th Commerce represented
Maharashtra at 7 sub junior and senior 7-A football championship held at Kanyakumari in Sept.09.  The Maharashtra team won the Bronze medal in this tournament.
Gymnastics
Pranali Mandovkar of XI th Commerce represented Maharashtra in
Gymnastics and won Bronze medal in XXXV National Sports for women held at Margao-Goa in Nov.09.
SIKEI Martial Art
Priyanka Palkhe of XI th Commerce was selected to represent
Maharashtra at National Level SIKEI Martial Arts in Dec.09.

Cricket Boys
Our Junior College Boys Cricket team was the winners of Thane district
and represented Thane district at Mumbai division tournament organized by Mumbai district sports office and were semi-finalists.

Table Tennis
Table Tennis Boys team were winners of Thane district tournament held
at M.H.Highschool & Junior College Thane in Sept.2009.  The tournament was organized by District Sports Office, Thane.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
In the field of cultural activities our students have won a number of prizes.
The Sanskrit Dept. of our college participated in inter – collegiate Drama – competition organized by Dept. of Sanskrit, University of Mumbai on Sunday, 02nd Aug.2009. Our college won 3 prizes out of six prizes. These were

  • Best Script Writer  -  Dr. (Mrs.) Mugdha Kulkarni

          The Talent Academy has become an important forum for nurturing and encouraging creative talents of our students.
          Academic year 2009-10 started with preparation for 42nd Youth Festival organized by Dept. of Students Welfare University of Mumbail. Our college participated in 18 events and qualified in 8 events for the finals.

Our students participated in INT one act play competition. The play was written and directed by Shri. Rajesh Rane. For the first time, we conducted rehearsal with sets in our college. The play was selected for the final round.

Our college has started music training for students. Our music group called ‘Swaranjali’ meets every week for  2 hr. music session.  Mrs. Kavita Joshi guides the students.

Talent Academy organized a singing programme based on theme, ‘Love’. It was presented by our music group ‘Swaranjali’ on Saturday 21st November 2009. 12 students participated and presented duet and individual songs on the theme.

During November and December many colleges organize intercollegiate competitions. These festivals give an opportunity to all the students to interact and compete with each other. Our students participated in these competitions and have won prizes.

Walia college and won 2nd prize.

Ashwini Sharma – won the 2nd prize in Mehendi Competition at NKT College.

Dhiraj Lad won first prize in Cap Designing and Sketching and 2nd prize in Face Painting in Dnyansadhana College.  He won the second & third prize in pot painting and mask making in Sydneham College.

Ajinkya Taralkar won the 2nd prize in T-shirt Painting at D.Y.Patil College.

Kshitija Joshi won the 3rd prize in Light Vocal at Jallosh organized by Ideal Foundation and in Dnyanasadhana College.

Shashank Mohite & Kshitija Joshi won the 1st prize at Dnyansadhana College in Duet Singing.
Shaahank Mohite & Swapnaja Marathe won the 1st prize at D.Y.Patil College in Duet Singing.

Hrishikesh Patil won the consolation prize in solo singing at Dnyansadhana College.

N.C.C. 
Our College has NCC Army and Navy Unit for Boys and Girls.  Our cadets are actively involved in attending Training Camps in different parts of the Country.  In addition to this they are encouraged to participate in community activities like Tree Plantation, Blood Donation and Personality Development Programmes.

Lt.Madhavi Joshi, Teacher in Commerce completed the Associated NCC officers Training held at Gwalier from 6th Sept. to 5th Dec.09.
N.S.S.
The NSS Unit of our college increased its strength from 100 to 150
students.  During the first term a number of programmes were organized.  A few important ones are highlighted.

Blood donation drive by the NSS unit of our college with the Thane Civil Hospital. 32 Bottles of Blood was collected on the occasion.

On the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, 71 students participated in the programmes organized by the University of Mumbai at the Convocation Hall
 A Poster exhibition on “Gender Issues” was organized by our NSS unit in collaboration with Akshara.  Different posters on gender equality, domestic violence etc were displayed in college gymkhana.  The poster exhibition was inaugurated by Thane District Coordinator, Prof.Anis Chowdhary. 

A Residential Camp of the college NSS unit was organized from  29th
October to 4th November at “Hindu Seva Sangh” Mamnoli near Kalyan.  58 students alongwith 5 professors participated in the camp. 
.
Our college has adopted a village named “Mhasrundi-Pada” near
Mamnoli, Kalyan.  On the occasion of children’s day, our NSS unit organized the first program in this village’s Primary School.  Various events such as puppet show, games, songs, distribution of charts and story books were conducted and concluded with distribution of snacks and sweets among the primary students.  18 NSS volunteers’ along with 5 professors visited this village school on this occasion.

In memory of the brave martyrs of the 26th November 2008 bomb blast tragedy in Mumbai, students of NSS, students council and the scholars Academy of the Junior College paid tribute to both the police officers and the common people who lost their lives.

Scholar’s Academy

          The Scholar’s Academy continues to encourage our young scholars in the pursuit of knowledge & academic excellence.   For the convenience of the students the academy has bifurcated the activities of the Degree and the Junior College scholars. A number of interactive lectures have been organized for the students of the academy by the Junior College.  Our students have enthusiastically responded to the programmes.

Counselling Cell
          Our Counsellor Prof.Suchitra Naik provides  personal counseling to our students, teachers and supporting staff.  With every client one to six sessions are conducted.  A workshop for polytechnic students was organized by the counseling committee.  A session on stress management for junior college teachers of our college was conducted.  The counsellor conducted several personality sessions at the NSS Camp.
Vyas Sabha

Vyas Sabha has been established for the staff members.  As the name
suggests it is a forum for discussing societal issues of significance Members of Staff assemble once a week - Degree Staff on every Friday and Junior Staff on every Wednesday and discuss a pre-decided issue.

Vivekanand Study Circle
         

          Vivekanand Study Circle conducts regular sessions of yoga & meditation to raise mental efficiency and concentration of students and staff. 
An Entrance test was conducted on 6th Oct. based on a book “Vijay Poorna Vijay” incorporating Vivekananda’s thoughts and ideals.  60 students and 13 staff members cleared the test.  Highest marks (97%) was obtained by Prof.Anil Bhabad of the Marathi Dept. Among the students Ujjwala Dhadwe stood first with 90% marks.
  In the serene surroundings of our kutir in the campus a one day camp
“Vijay Poorna Vijay” was organized for the development of students personality. Sessions on yoga, meditation, group discussions, patha natya and  special games were conducted.

Guidance Lectures
To give our Junior College students a competitive edge for the forthcoming Board Examinations guidance lectures were arranged for all the subjects.  Senior teachers from several colleges were invited to advice the students and prepare them for the Board Examinations.

Parent Teacher Meeting
Teachers-Parents relationship is important for the smooth functioning of the Institution.  A number of Departments in the Degree College have arranged  meetings with the parents.
A parent- teachers meeting was held for junior College where more than 350 parents attended the meeting.

Fourth coming International Seminar

          The College will be hosting an International Seminar on ‘Mind, Brain and Consciousness’. This event is co-sponsored by the Mens Sana Monographs, WPA (World Psychiatric Association) and ICPR (Indian Council of Philosophical Research 
          Two guest lecture - on ‘Mind, Brain and Consciousness were conducted. on 30th June, 2009 and 18th September, 2009 and two preparatory workshop was conducted on 31st October 2009 & 27th November 2009. The National Seminar will be held on 14th and 15th January 2010.  Eminent International & National Scholars will be presenting papers on the occasion.

Our students are our strength. Well behaved & disciplined they have contributed to the growing stature of our college. Our visitors have again and again complimented our students for their good behavior.
We have prizes in the category of Best Students Arts, Commerce, Self-financing (Degree College) and Arts & Commerce (Junior College). The prizes are awarded to the students for academic excellence, participation in extra curricular activities and exemplary behavior.

Achievements of Teaching Staff

We are fortunate in having a band of dedicated teachers and supporting
staff who are engaged in a number of academic and related activities. I would like to mention some of them.

Prin.Dr.(Mrs.) Shakuntala A. Singh was appointed member of Arts Faculty, University of Mumbai.
Prin.Dr.Singh was invited at the 84th Annual National Conference jointly organized by University of Mumbai, Dept. of Philosophy and Indian Philosophical Congress held at Mumbai in the month of October to present a paper on the topic on “Study,  Teaching and Research”.
She also participated in the Round Table Conference held in the same conference.  Inputs were taken from the discussion to design next years conference.

Prof. D.S. Bhide was elected member of the management committee of Municipal Corporation Public library, Kalyan.
He organized State Level Poetry Competition on behalf of P.L. Deshpande open forum, Kalyan.

Prof. Smita Bhide was coopted as a member of Board of Studies in Statistics, and appointed as Convenor to draft TYBA Statistics syllabus.  Prof. Smita Bhide was also a special invitee on the Board of Studies in computers.

Prof. R.K.Iyer completed a ‘Refresher Course in Accountancy at Birla College, Kalyan.

Prof.D.K.Morey’s Hindi Poem “¡¸½½ ”£½ íº‡ œ¸½”” has been included in the syllabus of SYBA class of Ramanand Teerth University, Nanded.  This poem is published in ‘Kavyanjali Radhakrishna Publications.  Delhi’.

Prof.D.K.Morey’s biographical details have been published in Asia Pacific Who’s Who vol.IX.
Friendship Forum of India a Delhi based organization awarded Prof.D.K.Morey a Gold Medal & nominated him as Best Personality in India.

 Prof.Suchitra Naik conducted a workshop on Stress Management for the employees of Thane Janata Sahakari Bank.

Prof  Monika Deshpande has completed her masters degree in Population Studies from the International  Institute of Population Science.

Mr. N.S. Barse was invited to deliver a key note address at the two day National level symposium on “Librarianship in 21st Century: Challenges & prospects”. organized at Thakur College of Engineering & Technology.
He completed a refresher course in Library and Information conducted at University of Pune, Department of Library and information Science organized by Academic Staff College Pune and secured ‘A’ grade.
Prof.Barse received recognition as a post Graduate teacher of Mumbai University in this academic year and was appointed as an expert by YCM open University to guide M.Lib.I.Sc students for the seminar to be held at Karmveer Bhaurao Patil College, Vashi, New Mumbai.
Prof. Y.S.Prasade completed a Refresher Course in Accountancy at Birla College, Kalyan.
 
Prof. D. P. Sable has been selected under the the UGC Faculty Improvement Programme to complete his Ph.D in Economics.
Prof. Vaibhav Singavi completed his M. Phil.with First Class.

Prof.Kalpana Chandoke presented a paper titled”Gender Equity and Maillennium Development Goals” in the UGC sponsored National Conference on “Gender Equity at Work and Home  A key to National Development” held on 9th and 10th January 2009 organised by Business Economics Department of K.J.Somaiya College of Science and Commerce, Vidyavihar.
She presented a paper titled “SEZ impact on Agriculture” in the State Level Conference on “Special Economic Zone (SEZ), A New Policy Initiative Future Pros. And Cons” held on 7th and 8th February 2009, organized by Department of Economics, Pragati College of Arts and Commerce, Dombivli.
Prof.Kalpana Chandoke presented a paper titled “Financial Turmoil and its impact on India’s Employment Pattern” at the One Day State Level Seminar on “Global Financial Meltdown: Challenges for India” on 18th February 2009 organized by the Departments of Economics, Commerce and Accountancy of Kirti M.Doongursee College, Dadar.
She presented a paper titled “HRD A prerequisite for sustainable Growth” in the Two-Day National Seminar on “Development of Economics and Commerce, Birla College, Kalyan on 28th and 29th March 2009.

Prof.Manoj R.Patharkar read a paper titled “From Data Processing to Mental Organs: An Interdisciplinary Path to Cognitive Neuroscience” in the 2nd pre-conference workshop of the International Seminar on ‘Mind, Brain & Consciousness’.

Dr.Suja Roy Abraham presented a paper on “Eco-criticism at the Ivth International Conference in Chennai on 25th September 2009.

Dr. Mugdha Kulkarni was awarded Ph.D. in Sanskrit from Mumbai University. Her subject of research was “ The Kalpasutras - a multi dimensional foundation to Ancient Indian Culture and Science.
She presented a paper on the topic’Nature, place and significance of satsanga in spiritual life according to Srimad Bhagvatam, organized by Anantacharya Indological Research Institute and  wrote a Sanskrit Drama ’ and won the first prize as Scriptwriter at the University level.
Dr.Mugdha Kulkarni was invited by the Dept. of Sanskrit,  University of Mumbai for teaching  M.A. students.

Prof. (Mrs.) Dipalee Mulmulay Completed M.Phil in Law and stood 1st in Merit list.

Prof.Vivek Pachpande read a paper titled “Reflexions on Qualia & Consciousness” in 84th Annual National Seminar organized by Indian Philosophical Congress.  He has been awarded Wadia Fellowship for Minor Research Project entitled”Racial Conflicts & Genocides in Mahabharata, an ethical perspective” by K.R.Kama Institute of Oriental Research, Mumbai

 

 

 

Prof.D.M.Murdeshwar has been invited at the office of ‘Controller and Auditor General of India(Mumbai)’ as a Guest Lecturer on the subject ‘Business Law consecutively for the last three years.

Prof. Mrs. Rueen Patel , Prof. Mrs. Mohini Kulkarni and Prof.Yogesh Sharma, Prof.Sindu Pramod and Prof.Shraddha Bhome  completed their M. Phil.

Prof.Shaila Srivastav presented a paper ‘Roll of SHGs in The Growth of Women Entrepreneurship & Empowerment at UGC sponsored National Conference on ‘Women Entrepreneurs of 21st Century:Trends and Developments organized by University of Mumbai & K.V.Pendharkar College, Dombivli.

Prof. Shraddha Bhome presented and published a paper on “Money Laundering”.at a State level Seminar – “Frauds in Banking, Insurance and Financial Services” at SIES College.

Ms.Namrata S. Sawant presented a paper at a State Level Seminar at B.N.Bandodkar College on “Need of Re-engineering in LIS Education.

Prof.Sushri Sangita Das][ presented a paper ‘Challenges of Rural Women Entrepreneur and the role of Self Help Group (Mission Shakti ) at a UGC sponsored National Conference jointly organized by Mumbai University and K.V.Pendharkar college and bagged 2nd prize.

          In conclusion I would like to place on record the support & guidance from the Management, Teachers, Supporting Staff, and Students Council & Students.   • On 26th September 2008, LMC Committee of University of Mumbai

visited college for Permanent Affiliation for BMS and B.Lib.ISc.  They were very much impressed by the infra structure and functioning of the system and achievement of the students.

  • Industrial visit of all F.Y. courses have been conducted regularly.
  • Mr.Gupta delivered a guest lecture for Financial Market students.
  • A Seminar was conducted on Library and Information Science conducted

by Prof.N.S.Barse on 6th Dec.08.  Principal Dr.(Mrs.) S.A.Singh was the guest of honour.

  • On 13th Dec.08 an Un-aided section organized a seminar on How MBA

as a career option and How it will change the Scenario Globally?

Forthcoming National Seminar

A UGC sponsored 2-day National Seminar on “Indian Philosophy: It’s Relevance in the 21st Century” will be held on 16th & 17th January 2009 at the Thorale Bajirao Peshwe Sabhagruha.

Dr. R.Balasubramanian, Former Chairman, Indian Council for Philosophical Research and Former Director, Institute for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Chennai will deliver the keynote address. A special feature of the seminar will be a symposium on Texts, Tradition & Methods of Indian Philosophy to be chaired by Justice B.N.Srikrishna, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India.

New Courses
We have started a new unaided course B.com with Financial Market with an enrolment of 35 students and an additional division of FYBMS.
On 10th August 2008 a post graduate diploma in Library Automation and Networking has been introduced by the Department of Library & Information Science.  This autonomous course is a first of its kind in the Mumbai University.

Dhiraj Mishra 12th Com. Represented India and secured Gold Medal in
triple jump at Youth Commonwealth Games 2008 at Balewadi,  Pune.

Navin Singh from FYBcom represented India in high jump at Youth Commonwealth Games 2008 and secured 5th place at Balewadi,  Pune.

Shankar Thevar of TYBCom won the Gold Medal at West Zone Open
Competition and also won the Gold Medal in 90 kg weight group at State Level Competition held at Mumbai.

Sanchita Gaikar of TYBA won the Bronze Medal at Open Group

 

Competition.

 

Samrudhi Patil from SYBcom won the silver medal in Swimming. ( 50 m. freestyle ).

Pandarinath Dalvi from SYBA won Bronze medal in Wrestling at Mumbai University.

Surendra Inerkar won the gold medal in Carom at Thane district inter junior College tournament at Vasai and also won the Gold Medal at Mumbai Division Competition.

Sampada Raut of XIIth Com. won the Gold Medal in 38 kg group at
Thane District inter junior collegiate competition. 

Manali Deshpande of XIIth Com. won the silver medal in 60 kg group
in Karate at Thane inter junior collegiate competition.

 

Kanad Meshram of XIIth Com. won the Silver Medal at Thane
district SQAY Marshal Arts held at Thane.  He also won the Bronze Medal at Mumbai division held at Wadala.

Mangesh Yadav, XII th Com. won the Gold Medal in 65 kg group at
Thane District Inter Junior Collegiate Judo Competition.

Manali Shinde of XIIth Com. won the Gold Medal in Heavy weight
group at Thane District taekwondo Competition.

Dnyanda Limaye of XIIth Com. won the Gold Medal in light weight kg
group in the above mentioned tournament. In the Mumbai Zonal Taekwondo Competition Manali Shinde won the Silver Medal and Dnyanda Limaye won the Bronze Medal

Chinmay Agharkar of XIIth Com. was selected to represent Mumbai

Division at State Level inter junior collegiate tournament held at Aurangabad.

 

Ajinkya Mauli won the Gold Medal in Long Junp and Bronze Medal in
high jump at Thane District Inter Junior Collegiate Athletic Meet.

Our junior college boys and girls of the kho-kho team won at the Taluka level, at the inter junior college tournament, in September 2008 at Thane. The boys team were winners at Thane District inter junior collegiate kho-kho tournament.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
In the field of cultural activities our students have won a number of prizes.

Mayuri Pawar won the third prize in Classical Dance in inter-collegiate Youth Festival organized by the Mumbai University.

Kailas Kadam was awarded consolation prize for acting in inter-collegiate Youth Festival organized by the Mumbai University.

Sanjyoti Redkar of SYBA won first prize in Rangoli in NKT College, 1st prize in T-Shirt Painting and On the Spot Painting in Adarsh College, first prize in T-Shirt Painting in Dnyandashana College & 7 second prizes for creative activities in Ratnam, Somaiya & Adarsh College.

Venkatesh Kadam of SYBA son First Prize in Cartooning, Best out of Waste, Paper Bag Making in Ratnam College, First Prize in Tatoo making in Somaiya College and first in Rangoli in Dnyansadhana College.

Tejashree Parchure was awarded first prize for solo singing in Pragati College.

          The Student Council Members under the guidance of Cultural Committee Members organized “Gandharva Mahotsav” an Inter-Collegiate Cultural Competition.  16 colleges participated in the Festival comprising of 16 events.  
          The Vivekananda Kendra ( KanyaKumari ) organized a State Level Contest and Camp Vijay Poorna Vijay in our College.  An Orientation Programme, an Entrance Test and a one day camp was conducted.  The one day camp included Yoga, Meditation and Vedic Mantras.  10 students of our college have been selected for State Level contest to be held from 31st Dec. to 4th Jan.

 

N.C.C. 
Our College has NCC Army and Navy Unit for Boys and Girls.  Our cadets are actively involved in attending Training Camps in different parts of the Country.  In addition to this they are encouraged to participate in community activities like Tree Plantation, Blood Donation and Personality Development Programmes.

N.S.S.
The NSS Unit of our college increased its strength from 50 to 100
students.  During the first term a number of programmes were organized.  A few important ones are highlighted.
On 2nd August a District-Zonal Level programme was held along with ANIS.  The topic was creating Scientific Approach and Awareness among students in the Community.
On 12th & 13th Sept. NSS volunteers along with Zilla Parishad officials went to remote areas of Thane District to measure the extent of malnutrition among children living there.  The project was an eye-opener for our students.

NSS Unit organized a 10 days Camp at Mamnoli, from 11th to 18th
November 2008. In this camp attempt was made to cover different issues related to the village and issues related to the personality development of NSS volunteers.
          On World AIDS Day - 1st Dec. 80 volunteers of the NSS join the rally organized by Thane Civil Hospital to create AIDS Awareness.
         

 

Scholar’s Academy

          The Scholar’s Academy continues to encourage our young scholars in the pursuit of knowledge & academic excellence.   For the convenience of the students the academy has bifurcated the activities of the Degree and the Junior College scholars. A number of interactive lectures have been organized for the students of the academy both in the Degree and the Junior College

 

Talent Academy 

          The Talent Academy has become an important forum for nurturing and encouraging creative talents of our students. Three workshops were organized by the Talent Academy.  These were Dance, Rangoli & Light Vocal Music.  Students enthusiastically participated in the Workshop.

Vyas Sabha

Vyas Sabha has been established for the staff members.  As the name
suggests it is a forum for discussing societal issues of significance Members of Staff assemble once a week - Degree Staff on every Friday and Junior Staff on every Wednesday and discuss a pre-decided issue.

Workshops for Junior College

          A workshop on XI std. online Admission was held in our College.   Mrs.Sardesai, Chairman of Maharashtra Secondary & Higher Secondary Board, Mrs. Sheila Tiwari, Deputy Director and Shri.Mhatre, Asst.Director attended the workshop.

Parent Teacher Meeting
Teachers-Parents relationship is important for smooth functioning of the Institution.
A parent- teachers meeting was held for 11th classes on 23rd Aug.08, nearly 200 parents attended the meeting.

Fourth coming National Seminar

          The College will be hosting a National Seminar on Post Independence Indian Literature.  The seminar is organized by Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi and English Departments.
          Two pre-seminar workshops - on Post Independence Indian Literature was conducted on 22nd August 2008 & 20th November 2008.  14 members of our teaching staff presented papers along with other resource persons on various aspects related to the theme of the seminar.  The National Seminar will be held on 16th & 17th January 2009.  Eminent Scholars will be presenting papers on the occasion.

Achievements of Teaching Staff

We are fortunate in having a band of dedicated teachers and supporting
staff who are engaged in a number of academic and related activities. I would like to mention some of them.

          (Dr.)Mrs.Namita Nimbalkar (Lecturer in Birla College) was awarded the Ph.D. by the Mumbai University.  Her subject of research was “Gandhi’s Concept of Religion and Communal Harmony.  She completed her Ph.D. from the Research Center in Philosophy of our College under the guidance of Dr.(Mrs.) S.A.Singh.
          Dr.(Mrs.) Suja Roy Abraham was awarded tge Ph.D. from Madras Christian College, Chennai.  Her subject of research was “ Women in the Agricultural Folksongs of Central Kerala”.

          Prof.(Mrs.) Shaila Srivastava completed her M.Phil in Economics from Alagappa University in May 2008.  She was also awarded the Masters Degree in Population Studies from International Institute of Population Science.

          Prof.(Mrs.) Leela Bhat successfully guided Prof.Rueen Ayaz Mirza for her M.Phil dissertation under Madurai Kamraj University.  The topic of research was “Impact of Retail Management on the growth of Indian Economy”.

          Prof.(Mrs.) Radha Natrajan presented a paper on Medical Tourism in India – Current Status on 20th Sept. under the auspices of the 3rd Deccan Geographical Society – India and International Geography Conference in Nagpur.

          Prof.(Mrs.) Shobha Doshi has been granted leave under the UGC Faculty Improvement Programme to complete her Ph.D. in Philosophy.  Her subject of research is “Man God Relations in the Systems of Vedanta”.

          Prof.(Mrs.) Suchitra Naik counselor of the college was invited by several institutions to counsel students and teachers.  Four colleges of Kalyan through Samaj Prabodhini invited her as a resource person for Premarital Counselling Programme.  She was a resource person in the workshop conducted by Birla College for school teachers and resource person at the NSS Camp of Agarwal College.  She has conducted workshops on Transactional Analysis, Lectures for Effective Parenting of teenagers & Effective Study Techniques for students for social organizations.

          Prof.Tejaswini Nadgauda completed her Refresher Course in Mathematical Science organized by the Mumbai University & was awarded “A” Grade.  She has authored a text book for FYBCOM in the subject of Mathematics & Statistics according to the Revised Syllabus of the Mumbai University.

          Prof.(Mrs.) Priyamada Tokekar delivered a lecture of Women and Media in Birla College as part of Pre-Marital Counseling Programme of the College. She attended a two day teachers training programme on Gender and Sexuality organized by the Women’s Development Cell, Mumbai University.

          Prof.N.S.Barse was invited as a resource person for one-day seminar, on “Changing Dimensions in College Librarianship by MD Shah College.  He made a presentation on “Internet Access and Online Source of Information available on Web. Prof.Barse  invited to present a paper on “Use of Information Communication Technology in Modern Libraries and Teachers Role” at the seminar organized by Karve Education Society College at Pune.

 He was appointed as an expert by YCM Open University to guide M.Lib.I.Sc. students for the seminar  at Sawantwadi Centre.  He was invited to deliver a lecture on “Career Opportunities in Library and Information Science at Abhinav College.  Prof.Barse was part of the syllabus revision committee for B.Lib.I.Sc. and M.Lib.I.Sc held at Department of Library and Information Science.

 

          Prof.(Mrs.) Shaila Srivastava  was invited as a resource person to give a lecture on “Impact of globalization on agricultural sector” on 13th Dec. 2008 by P.N.Doshi, U.R.Shah & Nanavati Women’s College of Arts, and Commerce & Home Science.

  • Mr.Gupta delivered a guest lecture for Financial Market students.
  • A Seminar was conducted on Library and Information Science conducted

by Prof.N.S.Barse on 6th Dec.08.  Principal Dr.(Mrs.) S.A.Singh was the guest of honour.

  • On 13th Dec.08 an Un-aided section organized a seminar on How MBA

as a career option and How it will change the Scenario Globally?

Forthcoming National Seminar

A UGC sponsored 2-day National Seminar on “Indian Philosophy: It’s Relevance in the 21st Century” will be held on 16th & 17th January 2009 at the Thorale Bajirao Peshwe Sabhagruha.

Dr. R.Balasubramanian, Former Chairman, Indian Council for Philosophical Research and Former Director, Institute for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Chennai will deliver the keynote address. A special feature of the seminar will be a symposium on Texts, Tradition & Methods of Indian Philosophy to be chaired by Justice B.N.Srikrishna, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India.

ADMISSIONS

Our Management, Vidya Prasarak Mandal introduced online submission of admission forms for last two years.  Our Campus is the first institutions to have successfully implemented this idea.  Our office staff extended their full support for this innovative idea, successfully managed the admissions & created a student database.

He won the Gold Medal in Triple Jump.
 He is also selected in the Junior Commonwealth Games Athletic Coaching Camp  to be held at Pune in 2008
He also won the Gold Medal in Triple Jump at State level and represented Maharashtra in same event and won the Gold medal at School national held from 9th 12th January 2008.

  • Naveen Singh XII th Commerce was selected for the Youth World Athletic Camp held at Jamshedpur in May 2007.

 

He won the Gold medal in High Jump at State level and represented Maharashtra in the same event and won the Silver medal at School National held from 9th to 12th January 2008 at Calcutta.

  • Pawan Singh of TYBCom represented University of Mumbai in Badminton.
  • Nishikant Patil of SYBcom represented University of Mumbai in Kabaddi.
  • Tejashree Ganpate of SYBCom won three Gold Medals in Swimming and represented University of Mumbai.
  • Shriprasad Gore of SYBMS won the Gold Medal in Kumite Black Belt.  He also won the Bronze Medal in Open Weight Kumite Categories in International Level at Kathmandu, Nepal, 2007.
  • Tushar Dhaigude of SYBA represented University of Mumbai in Lawn Tennis.

On 22nd December 2007 a well equipped Gym for the students of our College was inaugurated by Dr.Vijay Bedekar, Chairman Vidya Prasarak Mandal, Thane.   It was a dream fulfilled for the Principal to provide this facility to the students.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
In the field of cultural activities our students have won a number of prizes.

Venkatesh Kadam, one of our talented students won Ist prize in Rangoli in NKT, Dnyansadhana , Elphistone and Ruia College and 3rd prize in Rizvi College
Again, 1st prize in Arm Designing and Poster Making in NKT College, and 1st prize in Tatoo making in Dnyansadhana College.

          A 10 day residential NSS Camp was organized in Mamnoli, near Kalyan from 25th Oct. to 3rd Nov. 2007.  Students actively involved themselves in the various camp activities.
 •On 6th August 2007 the NSS Students participated in Peace Rally organized by the Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal and on 9th August they  participated in a programme organized at August Kranti Maidan.

•Our College won Ist, 3rd & consolation prizes in Drama in Loksatta & Yuva Jagaran cultural competitions organized for NSS students.

 

On 24th Sept. 2007 i.e. NSS DAY and 
‘UNICEF PROMOTED - DAY OF A GIRL CHILD’.  Our NSS volunteers organized a RALLY along with students’ council members & Women’s Development Cell.  
The theme was ‘SAVE A GIRL CHILD’.

The Scholar’s Academy established in the year 2005-2006 continues to encourage our young scholars in the pursuit of knowledge & academic excellence.  The Scholar’s Academy has been named ‘Ved Vyas Sabha’.  For the Ist time the idea of an Inter-collegiate essay competition was introduced & executed. A number of interactive lectures have been organized for the students of the academy.
         
Talent Academy

  • For the first time in our College the Talent Academy organized an Inter-

Collegiate Competition ‘ Š¸¿š¸¨¸Ä Ÿ¸­¸½÷¬¸¨¸   with sponsorship from ICICI Bank,
Kompass Aviation & Lokmat as Media Partner.  The Inter-Collegiate
Competition received good response from Colleges like St.Xavier’s College of Education, Ruia , KB and Dnyansadhana College etc..
The competition included literary , theatre  & music events.  ST.Xavier’s College of Education won the maximum prizes. I must place on record the excellent work done by Talent Academy in organizing the intercollegiate festival.

•UGC sponsored 2-day national seminar on Bioethics

Joshi-Bedekar College organized a national seminar on Bioethics at the Thorale Bajirao Peshwe Sabhagruha on 24th & 25th January 2007.

 Dr. Bhuvan Chandel, Member Secretary, Centre for Studies in Civilization, New Delhi, delivered the key-note address. The guest speakers, Justice M.F.Saldanha, Dr.Arun Bal, Dr.Sunil Pandya,  Dr. Ajai Singh & Dr.Firuza Parikh, enthralled the audience with their  presentations.    Two pre conference workshops preceded the seminar.

 

Workshops for Junior College

Three Workshops were conducted in our College by Education Department in this Academic Year.

 

1) Our College conducted three days district level Teachers’ Training Programme on changed syllabus of Book Keeping & Accountancy for Std. XI and XII from 6th to 8th Sept. 2007.  30 teachers from different colleges in Thane District attended the workshop.

Deputy Education Officer Shri. Puri was present at the workshop.

2) A Workshop on ‘Teacher Approval’ was arranged from 22th to 26th Oct.2007 for the College teachers of Thane District.
Deputy Director, Mrs.S.Tiwari & Assistant Deputy Director Shri.Mhatre visited the workshop on the last day & appreciated the arrangements made by the College.

3) A workshop was arranged in our College by the Education Department on 12th November 2007 to address the Vice-Principals & Junior College Clerks of all colleges of Thane District.
The workshop discussed computerizing the college records to be presented to the Education Department. Officers from education dept. addressed and guided the delegates.

Elimination Round of Youth Festival of Mumbai University

On 3rd August 2007 V.P.M.’s Joshi-Bedekar Arts & Commerce and B. N. Bandodkar Science College jointly shared the responsibility of conducting elimination rounds of cultural competitions for Thane District for the Mumbai University Youth Festival.  26 Colleges from Thane district participated in the competitions.

 

VPM’s Joshi-Bedekar College Film Society

Vidya Prasarak Mandal has established ‘VPM’s Joshi-Bedekar College Film Society’ on the ‘Janadweep’ Campus for benefit of our students.  The society was inaugurated on Thursday, 12th July 2007 by international film director Shri.Shyam Benegal.  Renowned Marathi filmmaker Shri.Kiran Shantaram and film critique Shri.Sudhir Nandgaonkar also graced the occasion.  Internationally acclaimed films are screened regularly.  The film society has received an excellent response from the teachers and students in the campus.

Generation Dialogue

•Today the youth lack guidance & support from senior citizens.   To bridge this gap a generation dialogue is needed.  Our college has given a thought to this issue and started a platform called Generation Dialogue where senior citizens will guide and advice the youth.

Parent Teacher Meeting
A parents- teachers meeting was held for   FY classes of Self Financing Courses. 
The purpose of the meeting was to explain the expectations of the college, breadth & depth of syllabus of all the courses & the response required from the students for successfully accomplishing the course.
    Dr. Mrs. Singh explained importance of teachers- parents-students relationship for smooth functioning of academic programme.

Forthcoming National Seminar

•A UGC sponsored 2-day national seminar on Indian Philosophy : It’s Relevance in the 21st Century will be held on 18th & 19th January 2008 at the Thorale Bajirao Peshwe Sabhagruha.

Dr. R.Balasubramanian, Former Chairman, Indian Council for Philosophical Research and Former Director, Institute for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Chennai will deliver the keynote address. A special feature of the seminar will be a symposium on Texts, Tradition & Methods of Indian Philosophy to be chaired by Justice B.N.Srikrishna, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India.  Two pre-conferences workshops were held where 14 members of our teaching staff presented their papers on various aspects related to the theme of the seminar.

ADMISSIONS

 

In this academic year Vidya Prasarak Mandal introduced Online Submission of Admission forms for all classes. Our Campus is the first institution to have successfully implemented this idea. I am happy to state that our office staff extended their full support for this innovative idea and successfully managed the admissions and created a student database.

We have introduced an unaided division in the FY Commerce section of the Degree College. This is in addition to unaided divisions at the FYJC and SYJC Commerce.
I am proud to state that we have received permission to start the Masters Degree in Library and Information Science (M. Lib. I. Sc). It is the first college in Mumbai to receive such recognition. We have 15 students enrolled which is the maximum allowed by the University.
The college is a recognized center for Ph. D. in Philosophy with Dr. (Mrs.) S. A. Singh as recognized research guide. We have also received recognition to admit students to the center for M. A. by Research.

 

EXAMINATIONS

 
Success at the Examination is an important index to evaluate the performance of an Institution. Judged from that angle we have acquitted ourselves creditably. Our percentage of successful students at the TYBCOM stands at 63.32%. Anup Chiche stood First. At the TYBA an impressive 93.01% students have passed, Poonam Mhatre from the Department of Philosophy stood first in the college. In the self-financing courses Edwina Pagar stood first among TYBMS students. The pass percentage at the TYBMS stands at 83.33%. Our TYBCOM (Accounting & Finance) results are equally impressive with 85.71% Mhaske Sushant stood first in the TYBCOM (Accounting & Finance) Exam. 92.31% students completed the M. Com. Examination. Pai Namrata and Savale Vrushali stood first in the B. Lib. I. Sc. Examination.

The H.S.C. results have been equally impressive.  In the Commerce Faculty our pass percentage is 94.67. 32 students secured Distinction & 253 students were awarded First Class.  In the Arts faculty our results are 79.29% with 05 Distinctions & 43 First Classes.  I congratulate the successful students.

Our College has established a formidable reputation in the field of sports. A separate report on the sports activities will be read later.  However, some of our distinctive achievements must be highlighted.

  • BADMINTON

 

Our College badminton team comprising of Pavan Singh and Sadashiv Rajguru were Quarter finalists at the Inter-collegiate tournament.  Pawan Singh won the Silver medal in the individual Championship.
Akshay Dewalkar represented India in Junior Asian Championship held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in the world Junior championship in Korea.
Ankita Malgaonkar and Varada Dixit of the Junior college are winners of the Thane District Inter Junior College Badminton Tournament.
Varada Dixit, Ankita Malgaonkar and Zaman Kazi have been selected to represented Maharashtra for school Nationals to be held in Kerala.

  • ATHLETICS

 

Prachita Patankar won the Gold Medal in long jump at Inter Collegiate Athletic Competition. She represented Mumbai University at Ashwamegh and won a Bronze Medal.

Prathamesh Rane won the Gold Medal at Shot-Put at the Inter-Collegiate competition and represented Mumbai University at Ashwamegh and won the Silver Medal.
Navin Singh won the Gold medal in the High Jump at Maharashtra Athletics Amateur association and participated in open national at Bangalore.

   Advaita Mangle and Swapnil Ghadi represented Mumbai University.

  • KARATE

 

In Karate, Sripad Gore won the Silver Medal at the third Asia Cup Championship and the Gold Medal at the 3rd open state Karate Competition.

Tejashree Ganpatye represented Mumbai University and won one Silver Medal and Two Bronze Medal at the Inter University Swimming Competition.
Samruddhi Patil of the Junior college won the Gold Medal at the Thane District and Mumbai Division in Inter-Collegiate Swimming Competition. She has been selected in the State Level Swimming Competition.

Our Junior College boys were winners of Thane Taluka Inter- Collegiate Kho-Kho Tournament.

Nilesh Shinde won the Bronze Medal at Inter-Collegiate Wrestling Competition. He also won the 3rd prize at Mumbai University.
Vijay Dudhade was placed First in University of Mumbai in Power Lifting.
Shankar Thevar was place First in University of Mumbai in Weightlifting and Power lifting.

  • CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

 

In the field of cultural activities our achievements are as follows: -
Our students were selected for the finals in Group Songs, Light Vocal, Classical Vocal and Skit in the inter-collegiate youth festival conducted by Mumbai University.
  Renukadas Dande won the First prize in the inter-Collegiate Poetry Competition at Shivale..
Anuja Phadke won the Second prize for Best acting at the Sakal One Act Competition.
The One Act Play ‘Search in Progress’ reached the finals of Amdar Chashak Inter-Collegiate competition.
The Thane Branch of Vivekanand Kendra Kanyakumari organized Bhartiya Sanskruti Pariksha. In this Examination Veena Kabtta stood First in Vibhag 2 which includes Mumbai, Thane Goa and Ratnagiri Divisions. Supriya More stood Second and Sneha Sharma stood Third.

  • N.C.C.

Our College has NCC Army & Navy Unit for Boys & Girls.  Prof. Deepak Sable was sent for Pre-Commission Training for three weeks to Nagpur and nine weeks to Kochi. In the nine-week training he was awarded the Best All Round Trophy.

  • N.S.S.

The NSS Unit of our College has been actively involved in implementing the programme of the NSS cell of Mumbai University. To sensitize students to rural realities & involve them in community development a 10 days camp will be organized by the NSS Unit of our College.

 

  • CIVIL DEFENCE

With a view to preparing the students to face natural or man-made calamities the civil Defence unit of our College organized a basic civil defence course for students in October.  The students were given training in first aid, fire fighting, self-rescue, handling un-exploded bombs & general rescue measures. Thirty-five students completed the course.

 

  • SCHOLARS ACADEMY

A scholar’s academy has been setup. The academy has identified scholars & has been conducting programs regularly. A guest lecture was delivered by the D. Sivanandan, Police Commissioner of Thane on ‘Mantras for Success’. This scholars Academy will help students to interact with some of the best minds through lectures and thereby ensure the intellectual development of our students personality.

  • SPORTS AND TALENT ACADEMY

We have initiated two academies – Sports and Talent Academy to   harness the talent & energy of our students in creative and sporting activities. A number of lectures and programs will be conducted by these academies. Our endeavor is to produce leaders in the field of sports and creative activities.

To involve the parents & ensure that they are in constant touch with their wards progress, a Parent-Teacher Association has been set up in the Junior College.
I.D.E. CONTACT LECTURE PROGRAMME (P. C. P.) CENTRE

Our college has been granted permission by the Director, Institution of Distance Education, University of Mumbai, to conduct Contact Lecture Programme for F.Y, S.Y, T.Y.B.A. Prof. S. G. Shinde has been appointed Co-Ordinator for the program.

  • NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BIO-ETHICS

 

A two days UGC sponsored National conference on Bio-Ethics has been organized on January 24th and 25th 2007. The conference will have eminent scholars presenting papers on Bio-Ethical issues. Two workshops have been organized for our teachers on the subject.
On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, students of our college along with teachers undertook a rally on October 10 to create awareness regarding suicide. They took a Pledge never to commit or attempt suicide, and always come to the help of someone who they know is in danger of committing it. They went around the city with posters and placards, to give information and bring about awareness on this issue among the citizens of Thane.

  • Prof. (Mrs.) Roopali S. Walu jkar-Deshpande has been selected for a vocational and Cultural exchange programme called ‘Group Study Exchange’ sponsored by the Rotary International Foundation. She will be visiting Kansas State in USA for 6 weeks in April 2007.
  • Prof. (Mrs.) S. V. Bhide presented a proposal to the Board of Studies in Mathematics and Statistics to introduce Financial Mathematics & Vital Statistics at the F.Y.B.Com.

 

  • Prof. S. G. Shinde has co-authored a textbook titled ‘Samkalin Jag’ for the TYBA History course.
  • Prof. Anil Bhabad delivered a lecture on ‘Competitive Examinations and Personality Development’ at the Vasant Rao Naik College at Nashik. He was invited by the same institution to judge the State Level Elocution competition “Vasant Karandak”.

 

  • Prof. N. S. Barse was appointed as Subject expert by Y.C.M.O.U. for M. Lib. I. Sc. students at Mamasaheb Mohol College, Pune & K. B. P. College, Vashi.
  • Prof. Ms. R. R. Bahel was invited by the H. S. C. Board Pune to review and recommend textbooks in History for S.Y.J.C. Arts under the revised syllabus.

Felicitation for Distinctive Achievements
              A few of our teachers and member of the supporting staff deserve to be felicitated for their distinctive achievements.

  • Prof. D. K. Morey was awarded the Dr. Babasaheb Dalit Mitra Puraskar by Government of Maharashtra.

 

  • Prof. (Mrs.) Radha Natarajan presented a paper titled ‘Cartography for the Common Man’ at the 26th INCA International Congress conducted by the International Cartographic Association at Delhi.
  • Prof. (Mrs.) Priyamvada Tokekar secured A Grade in the Certificate Course in Women’s Studies conducted by the Research Centre for Women’s Studies SNDT.

            She also presented a paper on ‘Domestic Violence in India’ at a State Level Seminar organized by the Women’s Development Cell of N. K. T. College, Thane.

  • Prof. (Mrs.) Roopali Walujkar-Deshpande completed her minor research project sanctioned and financed by the UGC. Her topic of research was ‘From Local to Global: Changing nature of Regulated Agricultural Marketing in Maharashtra’.

 

  • Prof. Deepak Sable won the all Round Trophy in the National Level Pre-Commission. Training held at the Southern Naval Command, Naval Base, Kochi conducted by Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
  • Mrs. Manali Ambokar, Senior Clerk completed her MA in Sociology.
